5 Ways to Ease Your Winter Blues

With the cold winter months approaching, some people are probably looking for a few suggestions on different ways to get out of that winter funk. Shorter daylight hours and cooler temperatures can often leave people feeling a bit lethargic, as they are unable to be as active during these months as they are at other times of the year. However, there is still plenty to do in the winter! Even after the excitement of the holidays dies down, and you feel like winter is stretching on indefinitely, there is still a lot that can be done to make these months fun for you and your family. These are five suggestions on different activities that can be done to blow those winter blues away!

1) Create the Cozy Indoors, Outdoors

A great part of the weather turning colder, is the ability to curl up inside by the fire with your pet or your loved ones around you, and soaking up the warmth from food and friends. However, over time this can seemingly become monotonous. Therefore, it can be a good idea to try and switch things up a bit, and try making your outdoor space just as cozy as your interior one. If your home has a deck - especially one with a patio cover - you can easily turn your outdoor space into a winter haven. With heating lamps or just a ton of blankets, sitting around outside under the crisp and clear winter night sky is a great way to add joy to any quiet evening.

2) Make Use of Your Outdoor Spa - or Install One

Winter is the best time to use your outdoor spa. You can recreate the beauty of a romantic mountain getaway - right in your own backyard! There is just something so unique and special about soaking in your outdoor oasis, letting the stresses of the season melt away and not bother you any longer. We know holiday-time can be cause of anxiety in some people. Use you outdoor spa as a time to get away from all that and decompress.

3) Host a Get-Together Around Your Firepit

Using your exterior fireplace or fire pit - or adding one - is another great way to bring people together in the winter months. Many people think campfires are only for the warm summer months, but gathering around a fire is a great group activity no matter what time of year. If you find yourself getting a bit sad in the cooler months, one of the best ways to get out of that funk, is to create a get together with all of your friends. Centering this around your external fireplace or fire pit is a unique way to bring people together and connect - offline.  

4) Schedule Time to Meet With Friends 

Even if the fire pit idea doesn't sit well with your friends, make sure you take some time to spend with them. One of the biggest factors of those winter blues is the feeling of isolation. Making a concerted effort to spend some time with people - even just one person - will start to make you feel positive energy and will bring your focus back to the people around you, which hopefully will bring you happiness. 

5) Finally Finish That Project 

Another way to get rid of those winter melancholies, is to finally finish one of those projects that have been sitting for weeks - or maybe months - undone. The best part about this idea is that the project doesn't have to be done by you! Maybe it's time to finally take the plunge, and build that deckthat you always wanted, or add to your landscaping with a beautiful gazebo. No matter what your project is, finishing it will give you a sense of accomplishment and help push those blues away.
