The world is full of so many different places to see, each with their own people, who have their own styles and aesthetics that they live by. By traveling to these locations, or even just familiarizing yourself with their trends, you could easily become inspired yourself to try out a new design for your own home. When looking at outdoor spaces particularly, there are a few different regions that have unique looks that could be incorporated into your own backyard. They can provide either a full design palette for your space, or you could just take elements from different places to make your own, unique style.

When one thinks of outdoor spaces, it doesn't get much clearer than the outdoor terraces of the Mediterranean countries, like Greece and Italy. The image of white terrace with crystal clear blue water in the background, or the Tuscan countryside, with grapes and olives peppering the distance, all come to mind when one thinks of the Mediterranean. What makes this location such a great inspiration for your outdoor space, is that there is so much to choose from, and almost a whole color palette to choose from. As mentioned, you could go in the Hellenic direction, with whites and bright blues and yellows, or you could go more subtle, with soft reds and oranges, combined with browns and tans to evoke a more earthy tone.

Structurally, spaces in the Mediterranean are often evocative of an Old World feel, with more rustic, unfinished pieces, and the use of stone or clay work to create patios or walkways. If creating a Mediterranean inspired deck, you might choose a wood that has more of a reddish undertone, and might opt to make it not have a completely polished look.

Japanese Zen

Another great outdoor environment is one that is found in Japan - the Japanese zen garden. This space uses a much more calming color scheme, like light pinks, whites, creams, and greens and browns to evoke the idea of plant life. Having a zen garden-like outdoor space is a great way to make a haven away from the hectic stresses of everyday life. Zen gardens are built on the concept of angles and shapes. Each shape has its own meaning, and the way everything is constructed lends itself to you reaching a zen state of being. No matter what you build - a garden, a deck, or a home spa and pool, placement is of the utmost importance if trying to recreate the zen spirit.

South American

The various cultures of South America also embrace outdoor living, so they have their own designs and trends for outdoor living spaces. Creating a quinchos - or outdoor kitchen area - would be a great homage to their style. Colors that are warmer in tone, like yellows, browns, and reds, are often found in these cultures. In addition to outdoor kitchens, fireplaces and firepits are commonly found throughout South America. Using your outdoor living space as an extension of your home, almost as if there was no wall between your house and the deck, is another design that is taken from South America.
